"My current series of paintings are based on the actions and movement of skateboarding. Skateboarding has been a big part of my life so it is a natural subject for me to work with. Like my previous series where I worked with breakdancing, I take a personal interest in the form. What I wanted to do for this current series was to focus on the actions of the skater therefore eliminating the skateboard. For someone who does not skate it might just look like people jumping around, but for someone who skates they might easily recognize the very trick the subject is executing."
"The approach to my paintings are basically in two steps, capturing the abstract movement and the real movement. The foundation for most of my paintings are abstract washes and brushstrokes and from there I chose the actions of my subjects that best fit the abstract foundation. The approach is like painting two different paintings. I generally paint quickly, trying not to spend so much time on details. I believe the rough, loose brushwork and the exposed under-drawing works best with capturing the movement and actions of my subject." -Nhon Nguyen |
